Particle Life
Small rules. Unexpected worlds.
A science laboratory for iPhone and iPad. Change how particles attract and repel one another, explore in 2D or 3D, and record what you discover. These are simplified artificial-life rules, not a biological model.
Start an experiment
Open Learn, choose an experiment and tap Begin. Make a prediction, change one variable, then write down what you observe. All six experiments and every laboratory tool are free.
Change the rules
Open Rules and choose which species responds to which other species. Adjust attraction and interaction distances. Tap a displayed number to enter an exact value. A responding to B can differ from B responding to A.
Explore the world
Use Play and Pause, or advance one step from the laboratory actions menu. Add, erase, attract or repel particles with the tools below the canvas. Switch between 2D and 3D at the top. In 3D, Navigate lets you orbit and pinch to zoom; painting acts on the central plane.
Large populations and demanding settings can slow the simulation. Lower the particle count in World if you want a more responsive session. Returning from another app leaves the world paused.
Save and share
Use Notebook to name and save a world with your notes. Export a
saved world to Files and import a .particlelife file to explore it
again. The laboratory actions menu also offers Share a picture.
Worlds stay on your device unless you share them. There is no developer-operated cloud sync or recovery service. Export important worlds before deleting the app.
Optional tips
Support Particle Life offers optional, one-time tips through Apple. Tips never unlock features. If tips cannot load, all experiments and tools remain available; try again when you have an internet connection.

Requirements and privacy
iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 17 or later. The laboratory works offline; optional purchases and external links require a connection.
