LoopLab

Small circuits. Surprising worlds.

A hands-on laboratory for self-replicating cellular automata on iPhone and iPad. Plant a loop, watch its signals travel and explore what changes when you edit the world. The loops are computer simulations, not living organisms.

Start with Classic

The app opens on a running Classic colony, based on Langton’s Loop. Use Pause to stop the world, the pace control to change its speed, or Step to advance one generation.

For a fresh starting loop, open Discoveries, choose The first copy and confirm Open experiment. This opens a paused experiment at generation 0. Tap Play and follow the observation prompt. Opening a discovery replaces the current world; save it in Notebook first if you want to keep it.

Plant, edit and inspect

Pause before making a careful edit. Select Plant, choose a loop from its seed tray, use Rotate if needed and tap an empty part of the world. Paint places the selected cell state; Erase clears cells. Navigate lets you move around, and a pinch changes the zoom.

Select Inspect and tap a cell to see its current state and the next transition determined by its neighbors. In Settings, Scientific view adds numeric state labels. The world boundary control chooses closed edges or wraparound simulation.

Look back and try another path

Open Rewind and move the history slider to examine a recorded moment. History records simulation batches and edits, so one moment may span several generations. Older moments leave the bounded buffer as the world runs. Choose Return to present to go back to the current world, then tap Play to continue.

With LoopLab Pro, Branch here makes the selected moment your new starting point. The original present is saved in Notebook first. Keep room in the notebook for that save.

What is free, and what does Pro add?

Free Classic lab

  • Classic Langton’s Loop, its seeds and discoveries
  • Plant, Rotate, Paint, Erase and Inspect
  • Play, Pause, Step, pace, zoom and boundary controls
  • Scientific view and still-picture sharing
  • 180 recorded history moments and up to five saved experiments

LoopLab Pro

  • Renewal/SDSR and Evolution/Evoloop, with their seeds and discoveries
  • Up to 1,200 recorded history moments
  • Up to 100 saved experiments
  • Branch from history while keeping the original present

Pro is an optional, permanent purchase with a U.S. base price of $1.99. The offer shows Apple’s localized price when the product is available. There is no subscription. Each model runs in a separate world with its own rules.

Buy or restore LoopLab Pro

Tap Pro in the main laboratory, then Unlock LoopLab Pro. Apple handles the purchase and may ask you to sign in. Once it completes, the offer displays LoopLab Pro is unlocked.

If you previously bought Pro, open the same offer and tap Restore Purchases. Use the Apple Account that made the purchase. Restoration may ask for Apple authentication and reports whether a purchase was found. Pro is not offered through Family Sharing.

If purchases are unavailable, Classic is still ready to use. Check your connection and use Try again in the Pro offer. If Apple revokes Pro access, a premium world is paused and preserved. Open the Pro offer to restore an eligible existing purchase or buy Pro again, then continue the preserved world. Restore cannot reactivate a refunded purchase. You can also open Classic to start another world.

Save and share

Open Notebook, tap Save current world, enter a name and tap Save. A saved experiment keeps its exact cells, model, boundary and generation. Select a saved experiment to reopen it, or use its trash button to delete it.

Settings → Share a world image creates a still image for the system destination you choose. The notebook experiment stays in the app. Saved worlds are local; Apple backups may include app data according to your device settings. Deleting the app removes its local saves.
