Privacy Policy
Conway's Life Lab · Effective August 19, 2026
The short version: Conway's Life Lab has no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. Everything you draw, save, and simulate stays on your device. The only feature that ever sends anything off your device is the optional AI Pattern Studio, added in version 1.2, and it sends only the description you choose to type.
Which version you have
Versions 1.0 and 1.1 make no network connections at all. Version 1.2 adds the optional AI Pattern Studio described below. In every version, nothing leaves your device unless you deliberately start an AI generation.
What stays on your device
The board, the selected rule, boundary mode, simulation history, interaction
state, and the patterns you save all live on your device. Saved patterns remain
there until you delete them. Nothing in this list is uploaded or shared, and
importing or exporting an .rle file is an ordinary file operation
you control.
Optional AI Pattern Studio (version 1.2 and later)
If you choose AI Create, the description you enter is sent over an encrypted connection to a service operated by Sub Rosa Industries LLC, and then to OpenAI, to generate a Life-like rule and starting pattern. Sub Rosa does not store or log the description itself. The service stores a one-way hash of it so that a retry can be matched to the same purchase.
Each AI generation is a separate consumable In-App Purchase processed by Apple. The service verifies the signed transaction from Apple and temporarily retains the transaction identifier, product identifier, App Store environment, request hash, delivery status, and generated result. This stops a transaction from being reused, and lets a failed delivery be retried without another charge. These records are deleted automatically after no more than 30 days.
OpenAI may retain API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days for abuse prevention under its API data controls. Prompts are not used to train models.
Generated patterns are also saved locally in Your Patterns, where you can load, rename, export, or delete them. Deleting a local pattern does not change the short-lived server record kept for transaction integrity and retry delivery.
Sound
Optional sound cues are synthesized locally on your device. The app does not access the microphone, record audio, or send audio anywhere.
What we never do
No accounts or sign-in. No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. No advertising, ad identifiers, or tracking across apps or websites. No selling or sharing of personal information. No profile is built from AI descriptions, and they are never used for advertising.
Service providers
- Apple processes In-App Purchases and provides the signed transaction data used to verify payment.
- Cloudflare hosts the generation service and its short-lived transaction records.
- OpenAI generates the requested cellular-automata result.
Children's privacy
Conway's Life Lab is suitable for all ages. It has no accounts, chat, or social features, and collects no personal information from anyone, including children. The optional AI Pattern Studio sends only the description typed into it, and requires a purchase confirmed through Apple.
Your rights
We hold no personal information that identifies you, so there is nothing for us to look up, correct, or export on request. If you want the short-lived transaction record for one of your AI generations deleted before it expires, contact us with the date and we will remove it.
Changes
If a future version introduces a feature that changes these practices, this policy and the app's App Store privacy label will be updated before that version is released.
